Trauma-Informed Health & Cultural Support

“When you share your story, you set the world on fire with your truth. You never know who needs your light, your warmth, and your raging courage.”

The Trauma-informed Health & Cultural Support Program (TIHCSP)
TIHCSP was created as a result of
the largest class action settlement to date
in Canadian history, the Indian Residential
Schools Settlement Agreement. Its purpose
is to provide former students and their
families with cultural, emotional, and mental health support in response to the traumas they experienced in residential schools across the country. This program has evolved to include Indian Day School, Day Scholar, Missing or Murdered Indigenous People, and Expanded Trauma Informed Support.
TIHCSP Support Worker
TIHCSW: The primary role of the TIHCSW is to provide emotional and cultural support to former Indian Residential School & Day School students and their families, to families of Missing or Murdered Indigenous People and to persons & families experiencing trauma. The TIHCSW will provide support to persons in crisis. The TIHCSW also provides support in accessing or obtaining professional mental health counselling through liaison with Federal/Provincial health support service providers registered and enrolled with Indigenous Services Canada.

Cultural Support
Culture is the foundation of life, of First Nation ways of knowing and being, and of healing. Traditional and cultural healing are wholistic and treat the whole person – spirit, mind, body, and emotions.
Traditional values, knowledge, world view, language and practices protect our communities and families. Cultural support services are provided by Elders or Traditional Healers.
The TIHCSW works with you in your community to support the families that have been impacted by the legacies of IRS, IDS, and MMIP. These services are available to band member nations of LSLIRC; Kapawen’o, Sucker Creek, Driftpile, Swan River and Sawridge. To obtain services contact the TIHCSW Program Coordinator.
